POLK COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS SET LOCAL OPTION SALES TAX PUBLIC HEARING

The Polk County Commissioners met Tuesday morning at the Polk County Government Center.

Polk County Sheriff James Tadman started the meeting by presenting the September Polk County Sheriff’s report to the board. The report showed the most common cases throughout the month, which included 195 traffic stops, 27 POR checks, 25 public assists, 22 motor assists, 14 animal complaints, and 11 suspicious activity cases. The Sheriff’s office received 2,653 calls from within the county and 832 calls for service during September.

Tadman also mentioned he was pleased with this year’s Sugar Beet Harvest Trucks and their ability to keep incidents to a minimum. “We did have one incident at Crystal Sugar Company when they were dumping a load of sugar beets,” said Tadman, “Either the beets lean toward one side of the truck, and it can tip. All in all, with our traffic stops and crashes, it went well this year.”

The commissioners have presented the renewal of the agreement for Fire services outside Crookston City limits. This is a recurring renewal with the Crookston Fire Department with an annual payment of $4,787.70 to the department. The commissioners approved the renewal.

Polk County Administrator Chuck Whiting informed the commissioners that setting a public hearing date was required by state statute during the review of the local option sales tax, which has recently been raised from .025% to .05% in Polk County. “This is a public hearing to establish local option sales tax,” said Whiting, “This applies for highway usage, so this is like 2017 when we first established the public hearing.”

The commissioners voted on setting the public hearing date for the local option sales tax to take place on Tuesday, November 28, at 10:00 a.m. at the Polk County Government Center.
